Titan is Saturn's largest moon. It was discovered by Christiaan Huygens on March 25, 1655. Its surface contains lakes of liquid methane and/or ethane, and there may be a large underground ocean made up of water and ammonia; these bodies of water may harbor life, making Titan a focus of observation by astronomers.
Titan gets its name from the Titans of Greek mythology. The Titans were the ruling deities prior to the rise of the Olympians. The name was suggested by astronomer John Herschel in 1847.
On January 14, 2005, the Huygens lander, which was part of the Cassini—Huygens spacecraft, arrived on Titan and made the first successful landing in the outer Solar System.
